What retailers use a QR code for
There's no single 'retail QR' type — a retailer typically mixes a few of FreeQR's existing QR types depending on the job: Google reviews, product information, a seasonal promotion, a social media or link page, a catalogue, in-store signage, packaging, an event or launch, a contact page, or a destination you'll want to change later without reprinting.
Reviews and product-focused pages are usually dynamic (so you can edit them later); a permanent link, like a fixed product URL or a social profile, works fine as a static code.
Static or dynamic — which one for a retail use case?
A static QR code encodes its destination directly. It's free, needs no account, and suits anything permanent — a fixed product page, a social profile, a plain contact link.
A dynamic QR code encodes a short FreeQR link instead, so the same printed sign or sticker can point somewhere new later — the natural fit for a promotion, a seasonal campaign or product information that gets updated. See how dynamic QR codes work.
Every verified account gets one dynamic QR free forever. Additional dynamic QR codes need an active Starter plan or above — if a subscription lapses, those specific codes pause (not delete) until you resubscribe, while your Free Forever QR and any one-off Lifetime QR keep working regardless.
Real examples in a store
A counter card asking for a Google review at checkout. A window poster linking to this month's promotion. A shelf talker pointing to a product's full details. A product tag linking to sizing or care instructions. Packaging linking to a manual or support page. A receipt linking to your social profiles. Signage for a launch event or pop-up. A catalogue QR near a display, or one code on the display product itself.
Built for print, not just screens
Every QR downloads as PNG or as scalable SVG vector artwork suitable for professional print — signage, window decals, shelf talkers, hang tags and packaging inserts. Add your logo and match your brand colours before exporting.
Before a full print run: test-scan the finished design (FreeQR checks it against an independent decoder before you download), keep strong contrast and the quiet zone intact, print a physical proof at actual size first, and avoid stretching or distorting the artwork when it's placed into other print layouts.
Frequently asked questions
- Does FreeQR provide loyalty programs, POS or ecommerce integration?
- No. FreeQR generates and hosts the QR code and its redirect. A QR code can link to your existing loyalty program, point-of-sale system, ecommerce store or coupon page — FreeQR itself isn't those systems.
- Can I change a promotion after the signage is already printed?
- Yes, with a dynamic QR code — update the destination from your dashboard and the same printed sign or sticker starts pointing at the new campaign. A static QR code can't be changed once printed.
- Can different QR codes in the same store point to different things?
- Yes — each QR code you create is independent. Mix static and dynamic codes freely: a static one for a permanent link, dynamic ones for anything that will change.
